Hair Extension Explained: What are Rows, Hand-Tied Hair & Genius Wefts
If you’re searching for custom hair extensions in Southeast Idaho, Western Wyoming, or Southern Montana, you’re not behind — you’re simply stepping into a more elevated hair experience.
Hair extension terminology can feel overwhelming — especially as trends and techniques evolve SO quickly. Most people are just getting comfortable with the word balayage, and suddenly we’re talking about rows, Hand-Tied Hair, and Genius Wefts… it’s a lot.
As a professional stylist serving Idaho Falls, Jackson WY, and the surrounding areas, I stay deeply educated so you can just “google it and go.” Here’s a simple breakdown of the extension terms you actually need to know when booking.
What Is Hand-Tied Hair vs. Genius Wefts
Both Hand-Tied Hair and Genius Wefts are not a method — they’re a type of extension hair that are attached to a weft. It’s important that whichever you choose, you want 100% remy, cuticle in tact, ethically sourced extension hair.
hand-tied hair Explained
Hand-Tied Hair created by stitching hair together by hand to a weft forming a thin, flexible seam that lays flat and looks like a micro braided seam. It does have 1” of return hair that is folded over the seam and can be a source of added volume.
It is recommended that the seam is blown dry to prevent the micro braided hand tied seam from swelling with moisture.
Hand-Tied hair does have the potential to unravel or more commonly referred to as “shed” if the seam of the weft is cut and not sealed properly afterwards.
Genius Wefts Explained
Genius Wefts are a modern, upgraded version of hand-tied–style wefts with added longevity.
They are ultra-thin and lightweight with a comfortable and low-profile seam that lays flat and is bulk free. This weft can be cut without unraveling or shedding and has zero return hair for the ultimate sleek weft.
Both Hand-Tied Hair and Genius Weft Extensions still require a method to be installed properly, and both can be used with several Beaded Row Extension Methods.
What Is a Row?
A Row (also called a Beaded Row or Track) is the foundation created that holds the weight of the extension hair and is how the wefts are attached to your hair.
At our Idaho Falls Hair Extension Salon, we use the Natural Beaded Rows® (NBR®) method.
This method:
Uses minimal points of beaded contact
Secures wefts to a flexible string (not your natural hair)
Reduces tension and scalp stress
Creates a seamless, undetectable blend
We are highly trained in this method and are proud to be home to 1 of only 5 National NBR® Method Educators.
The result? Hair that looks and feels like it’s naturally growing — without damage.

“How Many Rows Do I Need?”
Here’s a simple guide most clients fall into:
1 Row → Adds thickness only
1.5 Rows → Thickness + short layer blending
2 → Length + fullness (most popular & best seller)
2.5 Rows → Length + fullness + short layer blending
3 Rows → For very thick hair needing added length, or MAX transformation going from short to long
Your exact number depends on your hair history, density, and goals.
