Are Hair Extensions Damaging?

If you’ve ever asked yourself this… you’re not alone 🤍
It’s one of the most common questions I hear from women who are coming into The Studio here Idaho Falls, Idaho.
It’s a common question when looking into extensions - so you’re right to have some reservations.

HERE’S MY HONEST OPINION ✨

Hair extensions can be damaging… and they can also be a tool used to help heal your natural hair.

I know that’s not the black-and-white answer you were hoping for, but hear me out.

It comes down to THESE 3 MAIN FACTORS ⚡

Your extension artist’s skill and education
Your at-home care and routine
Your color goals

Hair extensions are not a one-sided service. They are a partnership.

And if one side is off balance… that’s where problems can start.

If you are curious How to Take Care of Your Hair Extensions - I share everything you need to know HERE on this blog.

Choosing the right extension specialist 🎓

If you’re researching and choosing an artist who specializes in hair extensions and client experience, you’re already setting yourself up for a better outcome. You want someone who is offering extensions day in and day out. Not a service they offer occasionally. Because the truth of the matter is, the more reps someone has in ANYTHING.. the more experience they’re going to have. The more troubleshooting they’ve done, the more hair types and textures they’ve worked with before. Ensuring that have the expertise to give you the best outcome and result.

This is the PROOF you want to see:

  • Visual Proof on HOW the method is installed. Show me beads, show me bonds, show me clean sectioning.

  • Grow Out of what their clients hair and extensions are looking like when they come back 8 weeks later. What should I expect my hair & extensions to look like after 2 months of wear?

  • Experience & Expertise - how long have they been doing the service, and how well versed they are in the method they offer.

If you’re seeing these things then you’re most likely on the right path.

On the other hand — if you’re choosing based on fastest availability AND/OR lowest price.

You usually end up with exactly that… fast and cheap work.

We know this, because we get women coming in frustrated with their previous experience and looking for extension corrections.

BIG FACTS about color + CHEMICAL DAMAGE 🤍

Here’s the part most people don’t expect:

Hair color can be more damaging than extensions.

So if your goal is:
Super blonde, or major transformations going from dark to light to dark back to light again… You have to consider the amount of chemical processing that your hair has to undergo for those color goals to happen.

Chemical Damage is something we see SO OFTEN with new guests, and a main reason women turn to extensions.

A thoughtful color+extension plan can actually:
1) Reduce how much your natural hair needs to be lightened - because the extensions allow you to look and feel lighter/more dimentional without having to bleach delicate natural hair.
2) Support your long-term hair health - extensions take the heavy lifting of heat styling so your natural hair can rest and grow.

THE PARTNERSHIP: Your routine will shift (in a good way) ⚡

You’ll have more hair than you’re used to — and that means a slight shift in your routine.

Nothing overwhelming, just more care.

Your extension routine will focus on:
→ brushing intentionally : instead of just running a brush through quickly causing mechanical damage.
→ deep conditioning + adding hydration : this allows hair to stay nourished and heal
→ utilizing a bed type style : this allows you to braid or twist your hair at night so you can effortless wake up with curls or waves and keeping the hot tools out of your daily routine.

These small changes make a huge difference in keeping your hair healthy.

LET ME SHOW YOU Real results ✨

In these women’s BEFORE photos their natural hair had either been pushed to reach intense color goals that left the hair compromised, or the repeated use of heat

Their hair is stronger, healthier, and healing. Whether wearing extension for a short time like 4 months or continuous use for 2 years, hair extensions installed with care and expertise, can allow your natural hair to grow.

Hair extensions aren’t the problem. The approach is.
